November Guild Meeting: James Koehler presents "Bauhaus Influences on Textile Design"

Saturday, November 6 , 2010
Unitarian Church of Santa Fe
Corner of Galisteo and Barcelona
9:30 AM - Social
10:00 AM - Meeting

Contemporary design owes much to the Bauhaus--a school of art and design founded by Walter Gropius in 1919 and existing until 1933. The Bauhaus gave voice to new concepts of artistic creation, design, and teaching methods. It brought together some of the most influential artists of the twentieth century, including Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Johannes Itten, and Annie and Josef Albers.

Internationally acclaimed tapestry artist and teacher, James Koehler will discuss Bauhaus history and the design ideas that influenced his work and his approach to design. Particular emphasis will be placed on work that was done in the Bauhaus weaving workshop.
James will also show tapestries woven for his recent exhibitions with Rebecca Mezoff and Cornelia Theimer Gardella, entitled Interwoven Traditions: New Mexico and Bauhaus. This show ran at the Open Space Gallery in Albuquerque in July-August 2010. An exhibition with the same title, but largely different work is now at the Michaeliskirche, Erfurt, Germany, through October 2010.

You can read more about the Bauhaus Tapestry Project on the net. Visit James Koehler's website . Don't miss his video demonstrating the creation of a tapestry from design to dyeing to weaving.
